Renovations
NORTH HUDSON, N.J.
— With renovations, maybe every picture does not tell a story,
especially after the renovation has been completed. Notice this when
the building is open and inform others.
In Photo 1 this old braced
frame building is being renovated with wooden I-beams to support the
2nd floor. In Photo 2 there is no
indication of lightweight construction. Heavy fire in the store can
collapse the floor above. Will we realize this in time? Photo 3 shows a void above an
old diner (now a hardware store) where the owner made use of the
“air rights” to build a lightweight residential occupancy above. The
void here is about two feet high. Utilities were run above via
breaches in the old ordinary roof of the diner. In Photo 4, the void is
sealed with a brick veneer. There is no indication that the void
exists. Photo 5 shows a half-diamond
shaft that existed between two adjacent buildings. In Fig. 6, the
shaft mysteriously disappears and is replaced by windows. What
happened to the shaft? What you don’t pay attention
to and pass on today can hurt someone tomorrow.
