My father was a firefighter, chief and trustee for the community I
serve. My brother works as a part time FF and full time mechanic in the
same community. My sister also used to serve as volunteer some time
ago. There is something to be said about the fire service running in
the family. I have been with the Lemont Fire PRotection District since
12/87. I have seen quite a lot. Been through a few tornados. I can't
even begin to imagine anything that our brothers and sisters faced on
9/11/01. They were doing thier job. My heart goes out to all the fire
service personnel and thier families.

I have been a volunteer firefighter for almost 30 yr.s now, and on
9/11/01 along with the rest of our nation I witnessed one of the most

firefighters and other services, and civilians, I also would like to

Since 911 my life has changed, I live in a western burb of Chicago,
that day while it was beautiful in Chicago too, we sat in our office no
one able to move.
I work right near O'hare air port and we hear planes all the time, the
quiet in the sky was deafning.
Even now I'm waiting for the next shoe to fall.

In the late 70 and 80's I vol. in Chicago as a paramedic, and I think
of the great guys and Gals that I have gotten to know.

My heart goes out to all of you.......thanks

I just read Dave McGrail's article dedicated to Andy Fredericks and
concur with Daves comments on this true fire leader. Andy had the
respect of many firefighters and chief officers from across the
country. His Ambassadors for straight bore nozzles and firefighting
tactics for hose lines will live a long life within the fire service,
far beyond one's normal life expectance. He was a true leader for the
HOT programs at the FDIC conferences. We weill all truly miss him, but
his lifes work will live forever in many fire departments across the
country.

though i did not know andy fredricks,i would see him ocassionally in
church with his family when he was off duty. i know his wife and
children very well. my mother and andy's wife have become very close
since 9/11. i see what they are going through and can only say that
they are exctremly strong people. i see the pictures in their house and
just think..wow what a wondeful man to have put his life on the line
for his country. andy fredricks is most likely a person i would have
loved to know. but i put my heart and prayer out to all of those whos
spirits are now in heaven due to the september 11th tragedy. god bless
you all and our country-

For the last 9 months, I have repeatedly seen the video and photos of
9-11-01. Being a retired Firefighter from Yonkers, NY, and trained by
FDNY in August 1965, I have a spot in my heart for FDNY. I retired as a
Battalion Chief, and owe a lot of my success to that training I
received long ago. As I watched the men entering the towers, I looked
into their eyes and seen what I felt many a time going to a serious
fire. However, they had a job to do, and did it without reservation. I
knew it would be a very difficult assignment, but never thought the
results would be so devastating. Last week I went to one of the
funerals for FF. John Vigiano, and felt in my heart that I now can
understand the disaster that has lingered in my mind and heart for the
last 9 months. My prayers go out to the families of all the brothers
that died that day. They will always be in my heart and thoughts. I
plan to go to ground zero in the near future, and hope to get to
Randalls Island also. Its just somethin

Brother Andy...
The few times i met you (through Brother Jay), you were nothing
short of a gentleman, and i've no doubt you were a gentle man. I truly
believe that you are representative of our fallen Brothers who rushed in
to render aid as others rushed out. May you (and our fallen Brothers)
rest in peace now, and may your Family be comforted in knowing that your
call to duty on September 11, 2001, was not in vain; rather a selfless
act of Courage and Compassion.
Respectfully, Joe Sermeno, Oakland (CA) Fire.

After 29 years I am about ready to hang my turnouts up for the last
time. Having sustained an injury that made it hard to work the line, I
have spent the last couple of years in the training division. For a
very fulfilling experience I would encourage all of you old dogs to
take a pup in tow. Consider spending some time downloading before you
leave.

I would like to thank the men and women of the FDNY and NYPD. They
woked so hard on Sept.11th trying to save as many people as they could.
They had the task of pulling people they never even seen before out of
the rumble. They had to pull out family, freinds, firefighters, police
officers, and EMS workers. For days they had to do this horrible task.
They all have done a grear job and I thank them for that. And that they
are all thanked by you and the rest of the world for doing the most
dageous job in the world, Thanks and God Bless.

I was on a coffee break at work when I came to the break room and saw
the first explosion of the WTC. at first I thought it was a movie
preview. A co-worker then told me it was live tv and they thought a
plane crashed into it. I was already horrified knowing that there was
slim chance for any one to get out of that building alive from the
crash point and above..and then the second plane hit in front of my
eyes!!......my prayers will still be with my brothers -&- sisters from
FDNY..your bravery and commitment to duty is the goal we all wish to

I have a poem I want to post here from the people who lost their lives
in the American Tradedy to their loved ones still mourning, I feel this
is what they would say to you:

Now that I am gone release me, for I have so many things to do and see!
You musn't tie yourself to me with tears, just be happy that we had so
many years!
I gave you my love, and you can only guess, how much you gave to in
happiness!
I thank you for the love you have shown, but now it's time I traveled on
alone!.
So grieve for me if you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories within
your heart!
I won't be far away for life goes on, if you need me call and I will
come!
Though you can't see or touch me I will be near, and If you listen with
your heart, you will hear all of my love around you soft and clear!
And then when you must travel this way alone, I'll greet you with a
smile, and a happy "WELCOME HOME"

I hope this puts some hearts at e

Tears of a Hero
I cried so many tears for you,
That I could have washed the soot from your skin,
And the sorrow from your heart.
I cried so many tears for your fallen brothers,
That I could have watered their ashes,
And made flowers bloom from them with fresh life.
I cried so many tears for those you helplessly yearned to rescue,
That I could have doused the flames and allowed their escsape.
I cried so many tears for the families of the missing,
Who looked to you for hope, when there was none,
That I could have made a river,
On which they could sail away,
To a place where there is no grief.
Each tear that forged its trail
Down the terrain of my face
Brought me closer to you.
I cried so many tears for you,
That we became one,
And I knew not where you ended, and I began.
I cried so many tears for you,
That I found the hero in me.

With love and admiration,
Bonnie O'Boyle

Dear friends,

2 years ago we (6 german fire-fighters and a reporter from Freiberg)
visit the engine-comp. 90 and ladder 41 in Bronx. It´s terrible to
hear, how much of the brothers must die at Sept. 11, 2001.
The are forever in our hearts. God bless the N.Y. Fire-Fighters!

My dear friends and heroes. I am not a Firefighter, but ever since I
was a child I have admired and honored the brave men and women who risk
their lives to protect our homes, our forests, our towns, our pets and
most importantly, our lives and those of our families.

As a resident of L.A., I experienced the "Rodney King" riots. There
were many things to be upset about, but nothing, NOTHING, disturbed me
more then to learn that a Firefighter had been shot by some cowardly,
scum in a drive-by shooting. When I think about what I'd like to do to
that ............., my adrenaline shoots thru the roof and I have to
calm myself down. Suffice to say, if I had my way, that shooter would
not live to see another dawn.

Like everyone else, I was intently watching my Television, during the
attack on the Twin Towers, Sept. 11th. I was enormously upset, but my
emotions were in check...and then the tower collapsed...and they
announced that there were hundreds of Firefighters inside. Men and

On behalf of myself, my family and fellow British fire fighters pass on
our thoughts of comfort at this time for all the members of the NYFD
and their families. In the tradition of fire-fighters all over the
world you answered the call for help and when asked made the ultimate
sacrifice. We watched the events unfold on the television and some of
those viewing were fire fighter recruits who were only a couple of days
into the basic training, they saw the example your department set, I
hope that the professionalism shown never leaves their minds for the
rest of their careers. Whilst we are distanced by the great pond from 1
fire fighter to another, we on this side of the pond also feel part of
your loss. God bless you and comfort you at this your hour of need.

The national tribute to FDNY Firefighter Andy Fredericks was very
evident at his funeral. Numerous firefighters from across the country
paid their respects to Andy. Over the years, Andy has reached many
firefighters on the value of a straight bore nozzle. It was very
fitting that the apparatus that carried his casket was an 1950's Mack
pumper. The front bumper had 2- 2 1/2 straight bore chrome nozzles.
Andy must have been smiling. Be safe out there!!!

I have been the sister of a firefighter/paramedic for over 25 years. I
am now the sister of a fire chief and the aunt of two rookie
firefighters/EMTs. All my life, I have been proud of the heroes in my
family. They are the ones I watch time and time again give up a
family meal because someone is having difficulty breathing; go out
in a cold fall rain because a car has rolled over on the slick
roadway; climb out of bed in sub-zero weather because
someone's house is buring; cradle the body of a child who died
much too young from a car accident, overdose, or gang shooting;
commanding the scene as factories burned, houses crumpled,
and lives changed forever. For every moment of my life that I can
remember, for every reason I can describe above, firefighters and
EMS personnel have been heroes to me...not just since
September 11. We as a world were asleep before that day -- lost in
our own lives, too often failing to say thank you. My brother and
nephews have taught me over the years wh

As a 9-year veteran in the US navy, I was seeking a new career path in
life. I have enjoyed the Navy, but wanted to feel more useful. I was
deeply moved when I heard of all the firefighters giving their lives in
an attempt to save other people's lives in the WTC. My son (3 yrs old)
was fascinated with the firemen and their job. As a result of this, I
feel as if God is guiding me into a career with the fire services. I
want to save lives. I want to be a apart of this magnificent service
that you guys are so bravely doing. Look forward to joining you soon!

To all in this world to hear. In the attempts to defeat us, we have
become united. We have come together as a nation, one people.

We shall never forget, for all eternity, the brave people. Those who
gave their lives, trying to help those in need. I am not able to convey
in words the sympathy we feel to those suffering from their loss. I can
only hope and pray they can draw comfort in the fact, that those they
have lost, are Gods Angels now. Still vigilant, and ever caring as

To my FDNY Brothers

September 11, 2001 was a very dark day in U.S. history and a day of
unspeakable tragedy for you and your families. I have always held you
in the highest regard and considered you the best of the best. I
recently returned from New York after having attended the funeral of a
dear friend, Andy Fredericks, Squad 18.

My visit to New York has had a profound change on my previous
assessment of you, for my admiration and respect no longer has bounds.
I witnessed a dedication to service I have never seen. I witnessed a
strength in character I have never seen. I witnessed a compassion for
fellow humans I have never seen. I witnessed a love for fellow
firefighters I have never seen. I witnessed resolve I have never seen.
You have redefined the meaning of “firefighter.” You have established a
standard very few can ever attain.

(continued in next message)

Ted Corporandy   11/Oct/2001:23:21:06
The World Trade Center is now hallowed ground. The words of President
Lincoln in his Gettysburg address are fitting. He said. “…we can not
dedicate – we can not hallow – this ground. The brave men, living and
dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power
to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what
we say here, but can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the
living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they
have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here
dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these
honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they
here gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly
resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…”

(continued in next message)

Ted Corporandy   11/Oct/2001:23:19:03
Your loss has devastated us. It has broken our hearts and broken our
spirits but we must, in remembrance of our brothers continue the fight.
It is now up to us, members of the Fire Service, to continue your work,
to “take increased devotion” to the cause for which you made the
supreme sacrifice. We must strive to be the best we can be, for you, if
for nobody else.

Ted Corporandy, Battalion Chief, San Francisco Fire Department

grant you peace.

I don't know if anyone will ever read this message, but for the last few
weeks I've been trying to think of some way to say to the family of Andy
Fredericks what I've been thinking about him since I learned of his
death. I'm a firefighter in California, and had read Andy's articles and
attended his HOT training and lectures for the last two years here in
Sacramento. I can't say I knew him well, but I can say the following:

Andy Fredericks was, for me, a shining example of what we should strive
to be as firefighters. He was a generous, kind brother to those of us in
the service, and passionately believed in finding ways to keep us safe,
and to make us better firefighters tomorrow than we are today. He taught
by example, both by words and deeds, and made monumental efforts to
teach us to be the best and brightest of America's Bravest- that is, to
be more like him, though I suspect he would never have thought of it
that way. I admired him as a scholar, as someone, as Bobby Kennedy said

On the afternoon of the attack I went to pick up my boys from school
(ages 7 and 10). Of course the 10 year old had a better understanding
of just what was happening. He could see the Twin Towers from his
shcool window. He said, "Ma I'm so angry" I told him that everybody was
angry. He said, "I'm angry about the attack, but I'm really angry
because I'm just a kid and I can't do anything." The next couple of
days we baked cookies and brownies. My little guy made a poster and a
flag. We brought them to the local firehouse, Ladder Co. 117. Those
great men, through their pain and sorrow, made my kids feel so proud
and so important. They invited them in, hung up the poster and chatted
for awhile. I will never forget their kindness. . .

Forever in our hearts and prayers. . . Lori Rodriguez and family

YOU ANSWERED YOUR LAST CALL

(Dedicated to the brave NYC firefighters who gave their lives in the
line of duty September 11, 2001 at the World Trade disaster)

I remember the alarm on that fateful day, as we responded in haste, to
be carried away.
With sirens screaming our advancing pace, we answered the call by
taking our place.
We have answered this call many times before, you see it's our job, we
expect no less, no more.
We know the danger that comes with the quest, but we answered that
call, by doing our best.

We are armed with the weapons of life saving gear, the voices of so
many calling us near.
Then we arrive at this god-awful sight, the towers ablaze, no time for
fear, just fight.
This was an act of evil, so may souls could be lost, we must strive t

Dear Brother/Sister,

I feel I have to send a note to you all to let you know how proud we
British Fire-fighters are of you.

You have shown the whole world what is great about the United States.
The courage and tenacity the American Fire-fighters, police and people
in the street have displayed on our TV sets shows what is great about
your country, and puts people like you way above these cowards who try
to destroy democracy. You are a credit to all who believe in goodness
and right. We salute and thank you for what you have done. We will
always look up to you with pride and admiration. The one thing we all
regret over here is the fact we cannot be with you at this time of
need. We would give anything to be with you. Thank you for making me
feel so proud to belong to the brotherhood. We are thinking and praying
for you.

I am saddest when I put on my uniform. Melancholy drapes over my
shoulders and buttons in the front. I am thanked everyday now for
something I have been doing for 20 years and I know this simple gesture
cost hundreds of my brothers. Occasionally I am asked why they went
into the building and I am reminded of what we do and I cannot answer
because I know they really won't understand. I make a tactical excuse
and move on to other questions. In the twilight of sleep that comes in
a 24 hour shift I am in a stairwell. I hear rookies nervous and
officers focused. I see Batt Chiefs scoping preplans and EMT's
preparing for victims. I awake suddenly and find my eyes moist from
subconscious memories. It will not leave me. My life and career have
been changed forever. It is like fighting an arson fire...you don't
mind the firefighting but knowing someone intentionally set it makes you
angry......I am now very angry. And anger with grief is hard on the
living. God Bless you Brothers

Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal. As terrible as the
losses, of September 11, 2001, were. God is still on his throne. We
have no place else to turn. No better name do we know. Yes, the voids
are large, but let's be careful of what we fill them with. May I
suggest filling them with the love that our deceased love ones had for
us, fill them with fond memories of the good times we had with them.
Fill them with a renewed committment to serve one another, and to bring
out the best in each other. The best that life has to offer is a chance
to work at work worth doing. Certainly serving and protecting our
neighbors and our communities is work worth doing. United we stand and
continue on. God bless each of the surviving family members, may each
of you find the Lords sweet peace, and God bless America

Dear FDNY Family, Friends, and Victims -&- firefighters across the globe,

As the 9-11 events continually unfold, and America tries to cope with
this tragedy, please know that your efforts have not gone un-noticed.
We've all seen the news reports of men and women of FDNY, NYPD and
EMT's working day and night to fulfill the firefighters mission- to
fulfill ALL of our missions. To save lives.

It is natural to have a variety of emotions that God wired each of us
with. You may feel frustration, extreme sadness, anger, anxiety and
more. Honor those emotions. Talk to God about them. Be honest with Him
about your feelings.

Despite the miles between Las Vegas and New York City, please know that
we are praying for you and we want to support you in any way we can.

And to the fallen: with eager anticipation, we wait to see your trucks
rolling again in Heaven's Fire Department. You are loved and
appreciated and I hope you feel honored by God for your work. FDNY is
truly "the Bravest!"

Des Hosie   23/Sep/2001:14:40:42
As the days have come and gone since the tragedy in NYC the pain has
not lessened but turned into a resolve. America, with the world's help
will see justice served on the perpertraters for this horrible deed.
To the families, friends and crewmates of The Bravest who gave their
lives or were injured, my sincere and heartfelt condolences. Know that
we your fellow firefighters both here in New Zealand and around the
world share in your pain. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We have held services and flown our flags at half mast at every Fire
Station in our country in your honour. You are not alone!
Along with our collegues the Police, we are collecting donations for
the families of the fallen. They are not alone!
Firefighting is an international brotherhood and it is tragedies such
as this that bring us all closer together as a family.

We in North Carolina never knew the brave men in New York. But we feel
the loss. Firefighters truly are brothers. No matter where you are you
can go to a firehouse and be treated as "family". I never thought about
dying in the line of duty until this happened and I know that
firefighters lose there lives almost daily but a horrific situation as
this has brought on a new way of thinking to me. That afternoon we were
dispatched to a structure fire, it was a commercial building and I
thought to myself "is this another attack? Am I going to go home? Who
would take care of my little boy?" I know now if a tragidy of this
magnitude ever happens in North Carolina, I can rest assured that
my "family" would take care of my Family.

GOD BLESS THE BRAVE FIREFIGHTERS OF THE FDNY. AND GOD BLESS US ALL!!!
