SUICIDE PREVENTION AND CRISIS INTERVENTION GUIDEBOOK

Acknowledgments

This manual was a labor of love, determination, dedication and commitment by several members of the San Jose Fire Department in California. Sadly enough, it was written after several years of sadness and grief experienced by the families, extended families and the fire family of San Jose Fire Department Firefighters. This manual is in memory of several beloved San Jose Firefighters. We miss them each and every day. The authors hope to provide a resource for firefighters should they find themselves, their coworkers, their families or someone they know in need. Their hope is to open our eyes to a word that is seldom spoken and difficult to talk about, but one that touches the hearts and minds of the survivors of suicide forever.

The San Jose Fire Department is grateful to Fire Inspector Joan Sutton for her vision, determination and hard work. She was the driving force behind making this manual a reality. We are also grateful to Captain Dave Gutierrez for having the courage to share his grief after the death of his son and not only co-author this manual but spend the entire year of 2007 teaching a suicide prevention class to over 700 San Jose Fire Department uniformed firefighters and civilian employees. Because of you, Dave, the elephant that sits in the middle of the room has been talked about and may have saved countless numbers of previous lives.

This manual, along with the education that was provided to San Jose Fire, could not have happened without Janet Childs. She is the primary educator at the Centre for Living with Dying in Santa Clara, California. She is known affectionately as the “Mother Teresa of Firefighters.” Her passion for educating and assisting firefighters in understanding and working through the grief process is unsurpassed. Without her we could not have moved forward and become more educated about suicide and how to heal as survivors of suicide. She taught us how to better care for each other.

Lastly, but most importantly thanks must go to former Fire Chief Jeff Clet and Fire Chief Darryl Von Raesfeld. They both supported this manual from the start. They had the vision and strength to recognize the need for providing this valuable information to the men and women who take care of people on a daily basis but needed to have a resource and support system to better care of themselves and their families.

Fire Nuggets earnestly desires this guidebook to be available to our Brothers and Sisters!
