Winning the Commerical Fire
Modern Best Practices
Instructed by Dennis LeGear and Matt Lowenstein
This class examines why commercial structural fires require a different tactical mindset than residential fires, exploring ULFSRI Coordinated Attack Study findings, commercial construction, ventilation, fuel-package arrangements, smoke behavior, and effective water application. Students will review large-building sprinkler FDC pumping practices, roof access considerations, stream geometry, and the appropriate use of handlines and master streams based on flow, placement, and velocity. The course challenges traditional commercial fireground tactics and emphasizes the decision-making needed to improve suppression effectiveness and firefighter safety.
Effective Stream Application
The 3 C’s
Instructed by Ray McCormack
Effective engine company operations depend on delivering the right amount of water to the fire and applying it correctly for rapid, complete fire control. Students will explore the Three C’s of Suppression—Coverage, Cooling, and Contraction—along with stream selection, nozzle movement, water mapping, positioning, and interior and exterior water application. Through real-world fireground examples, attendees will learn to improve fire attack effectiveness, support firefighter advancement and occupant survivability, and avoid common errors that delay extinguishment or increase risk.
