Stretching For Success –

In this ever evolving modern fire environment, special emphasis must be on selecting and placing the first line correctly. We must put ourselves in a position to stretch for success. This class focuses on engine company priorities and tactics. Topics covered are selecting and placing the first handline in service properly (a priority), apparatus placement, line selection, matching the proper nozzle to the proper line, and line placement. From a single firefighter making the stretch, the big line, and the quick mask out to make sure no time is wasted to make entry. Overcoming difficult stretches, vertical stretches, short-staffed stretching, demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of different hose loads and deployments in unique situations.

The Evolution of a Standpipe Operations

The evolution of a standpipe operation combines both “process” and “systems,” where all the parts come together m methodically into a choreographed performance; ultimately achieving the critical strategic goal of water on fire.  Students will have a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a standpipe stretch, the anatomy involved in the process, and identify how these systems play a crucial role.  The class will extend into hands-on training, focusing on the stretch, hose[line] management, water application, and problem solving designed to bolster confidence with newly acquired skill-sets to chisel away at the mystic of a standpipe operation in tall buildings.
