Foundations of Coordination
"From Mindset to Movement - Creating Clarity on the Fireground"
Instructed by Justin McWilliams
April 17, 2026 | 3-Hour Session - AM or PM | Pasadena, CA
Search Culture: Foundations of Coordination is a three-hour discussion designed to challenge us.
This is not the full Mindset and Search program, nor is it a full-day tactical deep dive. It is the starting point.
The session brings firefighters, company officers, and chief officers into the same room to examine how culture and communication determine whether search operations are organized or chaotic. We focus on mindset, operational clarity, and the systems that shape performance long before crews enter the structure.
This discussion was intentionally built to introduce Search Culture; to open the door and provide a portion of the framework. The three-hour format is intentional. It provides a solid foundation of the framework and a clear understanding of what expanded training can offer, all in a focused session that respects your time.
The objective is alignment. When alignment exists across ranks, search becomes more controlled, lowers risk, increases accountability and improves outcomes.
This session establishes a shared language and operational framework. From there, departments can move into deeper operational training, department-wide mindset alignment, structured search and rescue development, 22-minute drills, and hands-on programs - all executed with clear purpose and direction.
Cultural change does not begin with tactics - it begins with how we think about the assignment.
This session starts that shift and exposes the gap between where search stands today and where it can be.

Firefighter Rescue Survey
Instructed by Jeffrey Bryant
June 20, 2026 | 0900-1800 | West Chicago, IL
AM lecture followed by PM hands-on-training.
Lunch is included.
Hosted by the West Chicago Fire Department
For generations, the fire service has relied on traditional training and unknown information to guide search and rescue, often without knowing which methods truly improve civilian survivability. The Firefighter Rescue Survey (FRS) changes that by collecting and analyzing thousands of real-world rescues submitted by firefighters nationwide to show what actually works on the fireground. This one-day course connects the data to the discipline.
In the morning, students examine how rescue outcomes, victim locations, building types, and operational decisions impact survivability, using FRS findings to guide smarter training and tactics.
In the afternoon, students apply those lessons through hands-on, high-repetition skill stations focused on proven rescue techniques, including: search position, orientation, victim assessment, drags, window transitions, communication, split search, oriented search, engine-based search, VES, and masking up with gloves on.
The 9L's & Reflexive Readiness
The 9L’s & Reflexive Readiness
1-Day Workshop
October 1, 2026
Woodland, CA
The 9L's - AM: The mission of the class is to give people the tools they need to build a high-performance culture within their organization. I am extremely passionate about this, and I believe that understanding these principles can challenge anyone, anywhere to improve the culture of their Department. The presentation is broken down into nine principles of leadership all of which start with the letter "L". Learn, Listen, Love, Look, Laugh, Level, Live, Labor, Last. The ultimate point of the class is to provide them with the single greatest tool that I can give to someone in a leadership role, and that is a lens by which you can judge every decision around the firehouse... before you make it. (I say firehouse on purpose... not fireground)
Reflexive Readiness - PM": In the fire service we never know what call will be the call of our lifetime. There is no guarantee that the next fire we run on will be a run-of-the-mill one. Reflexive Readiness is all about learning the core concepts that will allow a person to build a culture of Unconscious competence. So that when things are hard and changing and chaos is trying to rear its head, we can be ready, adaptable, confident and competent.
No short class can turn someone into the ultimate fireground expert, but Reflexive Readiness provides the tools and a framework for beginning that journey. Starting on the premise that making decisions is simple when you understand your priorities, and then building from there. Just remember that simple does not mean easy! The remainder of the class is then spent defining fireground tactical decision making, and how to best maximize each and every attendees fireground experience, training, situational awareness and their comfort level when making decisions.
I believe there is a massive need in the fire service to prepare those in decision making roles to be more decisive and deliberate on the modern fireground. To understand that decision making is based on understanding your priorities. When there is a clear understanding of this throughout an organization then you can operate at a very high level, and with intentionality. Experience, combined with training to maximize your situational awareness and enhance your comfort level. The keys to achieving this are outlined in this class. When things are hard and changing, nothing can replace a well prepared and decisive fireground commander.

The Art of Reading Smoke
BerkeleyFire Department presents
The Art of Reading Smoke
with Battalion Chief Rob Backer
August 29th, 2025 | 9:30 AM | Berkeley, CA
Today’s structure fires are more dangerous than ever before. Lightweight construction, low-mass synthetics, and open space floor plans have created a perfect storm for rapid, prolific fire growth and extreme behavior. It is imperative for firefighters of all ranks and experience levels to be prepared for this new battle. The Art of Reading Smoke provides the knowledge necessary for first-arriving firefighters, officers, and chief officers to determine the fire’s location, progression, and future “from the seat” before seeing any flame. This knowledge ensures that the correct tactics are implemented for the best possible outcome. Through the extensive use of actual fireground videos, first-time students will develop, and return students will refine their knowledge and skills to become INTELLECTUALLY aggressive firefighters, rather than ARBITRARILY aggressive. The next generation of Reading Smoke brings new research, a new library of videos, and discussion on cancer prevention, tactics and strategies to develop the next generation of aggressive interior firefighting!
Battalion Chief Rob Backer
Rob Backer is a 22-year student of the fire service and currently serves as Battalion Chief for Thornton Fire Department in Thornton, Colorado, having previously served as a firefighter, Lieutenant, and Captain. He has written for Fire Engineering and multiple fire service blogs. He is an instructor for The Art of Reading Smoke and available to teach nationally. He can be reached at robbacker.fdi@gmail.com

The Three C’s of Suppression
Line Boss Leadership: Line Boss Leadership will focus on the mindset of a successful engine company, its staffing of the first line as well as addressing issues that arise on scene. There is no secret that the first line must be successfully placed and that comes with correct engine and crew readiness.
Students will follow Lt McCormack through a series of steps and tricks of the trade to ensure they have the most effective engine company!
Engine Company Errors - “The Dirty Dozen”: This class examines the twelve most common tactical errors made by engine companies on the fireground. These errors have led to firefighter injuries and deaths. Learn how to recognize and avoid making these errors.
The Three C’s of Suppression: This class examines three components of a successful fire attack. Your stream must provide Coverage, Cooling and Contraction. The quicker and the more throughly it occurs the faster we have a knockdown of the fire. This class will examine stream shapes, water mapping and room geometry as they relate to suppression. You have the nozzle and using it correctly along with a knowledge of effective application techniques will give you faster and more complete extinguishments. We will discuss the approach to the fire area along with busting some nozzle myths. Join Ray and get the three C’s on your side.

The Art of Reading Smoke
Chief Phil Jose
Through dynamic teaching and the use of fire-ground video, attendees will learn the skill of reading smoke. Learn about the attributes of smoke including volume, velocity, density, and color and how these indicate fire size, fire location, and predict fire behavior. Read smoke to improve strategic and tactical decision making.
Truck Tactics
Chief Nick Esposito
Success or failure on the fireground for a ladder company is often measured by how well an aerial operator initially positions the apparatus. Ladder truck placement at an emergency scene is often the "make or break" moment for any operator. The individual skills and abilities of the aerial apparatus operator can dictate how successful a truck company will be in achieving their goals at a fire scene. This class will prepare aerial operators to systematically approach an emergency scene to achieve an effective apparatus placement that will allow the ladder crew to make a positive impact on the outcome of any emergency.
