Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting

South Adams County Fire Training Center 10705 Fulton St, Brighton, CO, United States

>> Register Here << In this program we discuss practical application of command and control principles. We will cover the essential duties of chief/command officers in preparing their department and crews before the fire and leading them on the fireground. Our objective is to provide a systematic process of how to effectively organize and manage a safe and aggressive fireground – starting with receipt of the alarm through termination of the incident. It is designed to assist departments in growing and improving their fireground command operations, and in further preparing current and future officers to safely and effectively command emergency operations. This training course will also support the participation of neighboring response partners to enhance interoperability between agencies and foster continued growth of a common operating model. The concepts discussed in these programs are compliant with NIMS and NFPA 1561, yet focus on “street smart”, practical, and simplistic implementation of these standards.

The Nozzle Forward

Fire Training Center 11 Gerty Dr, Champaign, IL, United States

>> Register Here << This two day class will integrate the three major components of engine company work; fire behavior, hose management, and fire attack. The one thing that every fire department in the country has is fire hose.  The one event that happens on every single fire is a hose-line gets pulled and water gets flowed. The Nozzle Forward is a class for engine company crews.  It is not a collection of technique; it is an adaptable system of hose line management and fire attack.  It is focused around fighting fire, interior offensive firefighting, aggressive firefighting, for which we will never apologize.   Aggressive firefighting is not the problem, it is the solution. The goal of the “The Nozzle Forward” is to help craft more efficient Engine Companies by increasing the individuals’ competency with their tools and expanding on the conceptual aspects of the fire environment.

Taking Control: Homefront to the Fireground

>> Register Here << First, we will tackle the body. Stress-induced tachycardia and exertion-induced tachycardia affect the body in different ways. Stress-induced tachycardia causes a narrowing field of vision, auditory exclusion, loss of fine motor skills, and the inability to make a clear decision or have cognitive thought. Exertion-induced tachycardia simply raises the heart rate. Firefighter experiences an extreme amount of stress-induced tachycardia during their time of service. This will be expanded for both the fireground and the homefront. Second, we will go through some practices both good and bad preparing for the job. Past practices sometimes involve complex escape methods, elaborate mayday procedures, and training that is unrealistic causing a false sense of security. This has been recognized and studied in depth by many. We will expand on and bridge the gap between the science and the fire service. We will cover methods and practices used to help reverse or slow the effects of stress on the fireground. This is accomplished through breathing techniques, meditation methods, simplifying practices, and repetition. Our class will focus on how our stressors affect our home life and what we can do to bridge the gap from work stress to homefront stress. Lastly, we will dive into the mind both on the fireground and at home. We will go over techniques and experiences we have found along our way as a fire couple. Some of the topics discussed will include how to keep your family involved, diffusing and balancing work vs life, and reducing stress at home during shift days. For years we have heard the sayings such as "Don’t take work home with you.”, and "Keep work at work and home at home." We are here to break that old tale and show you how to balance your mind with work and home. Mental health is a priority and one we hold very close to our hearts. This lecture is a journey that we will take attendees on that is full of trials and tribulations in both the fire service career and our homefront experience.
